Nová Dráma 2023 festival awards

Bratislava, the Slovak capital city, was full of new drama from 15 to 20 May 2023. This year’s topic was Theatre in Exile. The dramaturgy board of the Nová drama festival 2023 (Zuzana Nemcová Gulíková, Zuzana Andrejco Ferusová, and Jakub Mudrák) shortlisted 10 out of 78 productions that could win the festival prizes.

Speaking of Czech artists, Lukáš Brutovský received the Special Jury Award for light design for his Jocasta. The project is the coproduction of the Slovak Chamber Theatre Martin and Prague City Theatres. Jocasta is an attempt to apply feminist revenge on this myth. It brings together contemporary poetry with distinctive movement and visual parts. The New Drama Grand Prix went to Juraj Nvota’s The Bride at Astorka Korzo ’90.

The ceremony also saw the awards for best dramatic writings in Slovak and Czech DRÁMA 2022. The first place was occupied by Eva Prchalová and Tereza Marečková for Žal-uzie, the second place remained empty, and the third-place award went to Ondřej Novotný for My Father was Saturn and Branislav Mazúch for Šelijaké veci. Subštancie.

The 2022 DRÁMA Organizers and Partners Awards went to Czech authors Pavol Weiss for his Bloody Wine (Ján Palárik Theatre in Trnava Award), Kateřina Rudčenková for I Feel Like a Norwegian Princess (National Theatre Košice Award), and Jan Daniel’s Ježíšku milosrdný (Jozef Gregor Takovský Theatre in Zvolen Award).
