Taneční zóna/Dance Zone

Taneční zóna/Dance Zone is a quarterly designed for a wide spectrum of contemporary dance, physical theatre, and performance. It has been published since 1997 and is a platform for current events and thinking in the specific disciplines, as well as the space for timeless and historical topics. Apart from reports, essays, and contemplating historical connections to current affairs, last year focused on round tables with various topics, with in-person or distance participation of active artists, programmers, and theoreticians. Each issue contained two edited recordings of the meetings.

The editorial staff published a special issue of Dance Zone, featuring three topics of the round tables: Moms and Dads in Dance, dealing with active artists’ maternity, Dance and Politics, reflecting the possibilities and limits of political theatre (not necessarily dance theatre), and Places for Dance, mapping the non-traditional – real and potential – spaces and buildings for performative art in Prague. The last one is an original material prepared for this issue, which was not published last year (it will be published in Dance Zone 1/2021 with additional information).

Participants of round tables were Czech and international performers, professional dancers, critics, theoreticians, and choreographers, such as the acknowledged choreographer Jiří Kylián (the issue features the original interview and his text Without Faith in Utopia the Future is Unthinkable), director of Dance Prague Yvona Kreuzmannová, director of the festival 4+4 Days in Motion Pavel Štorek, journalist Nina Vangeli, director Jiří Havelka, artistic director of Prague Studio Hrdinů Jan Horák, production manager at Jatka78 Štěpán Kubišta, director of Venuše ve Švehlovce Jakub Čermák, director of X10 Theatre Lenka Havlíková, and the founder of the Vila Štvanice project Ivo Kristián Kubák. The main participants were active dancers and performers, such as Jan Minařík (the former soloist in Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal), Alexej Jurakov (the soloist of F. X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec), Václav Kuneš (420People), Veronika Knytlová (VerTeDance), and performers Miřenka Čechová, Halka Jeřábek Třešňáková, Eliška Brtnická, Nela Husták Kornetová, Linda Straub, and Alice Roma from France.

All texts in the special edition of Dance Zone called Motherhood, Politics and Empty Houses – Round Tables (No. 1) were published in Czech and English.
