The novel The Old Woman by the Russian avant-garde author Daniil Charms humorously reveals the terrifying reality of life in Russia throughout the centuries. The short text, although it is one of the author’s longest, is the starting point for the complex phenomenon of the “Russian man”. A person who lives in the illusion of freedom, intimacy, artistic self-expression and a dignified life. The metaphor of evil here is a dead old woman who, despite a series of more or less absurd attempts, cannot be removed. But who or rather what is the unsolvable problem, is it an external force or one’s own imagination, which is a mortal danger in an unfree society?
