“Not that she was striking; not beautiful at all; there was nothing picturesque about her; she never said anything specially clever; there she was however; there she was.”
Mrs. Dalloway is throwing a party. She said she would buy the flowers herself. Something happened before the sentence was finished. She opened the door. Now that there was no wedding or children awaiting her, she had a strange feeling of being invisible, unseen, unknown. A production based on Virginia Woolf’s novel about the fear of time, the phenomenon of invisible women, and one day in June. An image of a world falling apart, a celebration of life and presence. Why cling to the past or expect the future? Who are we right here and now? Is there a moment we need to live for?
About the company
Divadlo Na zábradlí (Theatre on the Balustrade) is one of the most significant theatre venues in the Czech Republic. Located in the centre of Prague, the theatre charms thousands of spectators every month with its unique atmosphere, its innovative pieces, and the outstanding acting performances of the finest actors in the area. Its productions speak to an audience that is engaged, open-minded, and willing to think about art and the serious issues it presents.
Since 2013, Petr Štědroň has been the director of Divadlo Na zábradlí, with Dora Štědroňová as the artistic director and Jan Mikulášek as the main director. Together, they have created an artistically strong collective admired by audiences and appreciated by critics. The theatre’s dramaturgy is currently following the path of original productions (for example, Hedonists, Hamlets, and the documentary Discoland), dramatisations of novels (such as Bernhard’s Woodcutters and Daňa Horáková’s autobiographical book About Pavel), and radical interpretations of classics (such as Balzac’s Lost Illusions and an adaptation of Resurrection by Leo Tolstoy). In recent years, the theatre’s artistic management has been enriched by the widely acclaimed young dramaturgs Petr Erbes and Boris Jedinák, who bring a fresh poetics of semi-documentary productions to the repertoire.
The ensemble of Divadlo Na zábradlí regularly performs on domestic and foreign stages and festivals – it frequently visits Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Germany, but it has also performed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Colombia, the USA and other countries.
