Kawloon, a large apartment block. The largest apartment block in the world. An apartment block that no longer exists, it is full of endless, intricate, dark alleys where anyone who doesn’t belong gets lost. Tuan stands at the gates to this building. All alone, he needs to get inside and find his way to a new home.
Kawloon Walled City was a part of Hong Kong that was not subject to any government control. Over time, the original defensive fortress grew into a single large building covering an area of 0.026 km2 and housing over 50,000 inhabitants. Through projection batteries, light and sound animation, the puppet production Kowloon: The World’s Largest House tells a story about discovering this intricate place and getting to know a new home.
About the company
The FRAS theatre group was established in early 2019 in the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) as its founders’ joint project. Over the years, FRAS established itself professionally, operating as a registered association since 2023. Members include Johana Šulík Bártová, Alexandra Dvořáková, Jakub Šulík and Matěj Šumbera.
FRAS has long been involved in puppet and object theatre and explores the experimental possibilities of this theatrical genre. Its primary aim is to discover a unique theatrical language that incorporates elements from other artistic fields, such as film and computer games. FRAS currently has eight puppet and object theatre productions for audiences aged six and up in its repertoire.
FRAS’s permanent Prague venue is the Dejvické divadlo café, although the company focuses primarily on touring productions regionally in the Czech Republic and abroad. FRAS stages over 70 events a year, approximately 27% of which are presented abroad. In recent years, FRAS has also focused on lecturing activities aimed at the general public, students, and theatre professionals.
