Two unifying lines run through all of Leoš Janáček’s compositions like a red thread – deep humanity and original forms. This is perhaps most applicable to his last two great works – the opera From the Dead House, a concise probe into prisoners’ souls, and the Glagolitic Mass, a unique expression of faith in a mass based on an Old Slavonic text. A unique combination of the two works was created as part of the 2022 Janáček Brno festival, in which the Glagolitic Mass is framed as a continuation of From the Dead House, endowing both works with a new statement about the power of faith in humankind.
About the company
The Janáček Opera’s repertoire includes works from the Baroque to the present day. The company’s projects include the names of leading Czech (e.g. Jakub Hrůša) and foreign (e.g. Robert Carsen) directors. We support the creation of new operas and will host the world premiere of Here I Am, Orlando by Lubica Čekovská this season. “Our company boasts a world-renowned chorus, an exceptional orchestra and an ensemble of 17 soloists,” notes artistic director Jiří Heřman. With the largest stage in the Czech Republic, the Janáček Theatre’s activities reach all over the world.
