Five Journeys Around the World

obr

An outdoor family production inspired by the adventures of the traveller Barbora Markéta Eliášová, who set out on her first trip around the world in 1912. Travelling across Russia by train to Vladivostok, she set sail on a steamer to Japan, where she worked as a tutor for the children of an English professor. She learned Japanese, ate with chopsticks, wore a kimono and became the first European graduate of an ikebana course. She travelled from Japan to America by boat and returned to Prague by boat via Chicago and New York. She then went on four more trips around the world, each time choosing a different route. She recognised the godliness of the Dutch colonisers in Java and the vitality and suspicious carelessness of the Australians and wrote diaries, travelogues and novels about everything.

This is an inspiring and adventurous story of a courageous, diligent girl who grew up in an orphanage, but fulfilled her dreams and travelled around the world alone at a time when women did not even have the right to vote.

About the company

Tygr v tisní (Tiger in Trouble) is a theatre company that seeks out historical and contemporary themes with a local connection. Interested in non-traditional formats and spaces, we often work with documentary and non-dramatic materials. Since 2016, we have organised the Antická Štvanice festival, an annual celebration of ancient theatre in the open air.
