The production combines an adaptation of the famous novel by Erich Maria Remarque with a contemporary play by the Ukrainian author Natalia Vorozhbyt. The first part describes the life of frontline soldiers in World War I, the experience of trenches, attacks and retreats where lives, ideals and values are lost because of a minor change in the front’s position. The second part focuses on the lives of Ukrainian refugees arriving in Central or Western Europe and endlessly standing in all kinds of lines. Hopefully, they’ll get the promise of a fresh start at the end of the line. The performance delves into questions about the purpose and origins of war in the early twentieth century, alongside a reflection on the enduring impact of war crimes in present-day Ukraine. Heroic pathos and basic human needs are brought to the stage through the characters as historical images and contemporary geopolitical dynamics intertwine with media coverage.
