2020 Theatre Critics’ Awards have been announced

The Theatre Critics’ Awards announced annually know their laureates for 2020. The awards are declared by World and Theatre journal based on professional votes. The production of the year is Zahradníček/What Is Mine is Yours. The award for the best performance went to Lucie Trmíková in the same project she also wrote the script for.

The best actor is Karel Dobrý in Little Creator/Der kleine Fratz directed by Jan Nebeský. Cirk La Putyka dedicated to the contemporary circus was pronounced the best theatre. The production of the year Zahradníček/What Is Mine is Yours was directed by Jan Nebeský in TheatreX10 and Saša Rašilov plays the role of poet Jan Zahradníček with this year’s double laureate Trmíková. The project was created on the occasion of the poet’s 115th birthday tells a story about Zahradníček’s long imprisonment in the Communist camp, where he wrote letters to his wife Marie, played by Trmíková.

The JEDL Theatre Company that produced the performance about Zahradníček also staged Little Creator/Der kleine Fratz with Nebeská as a director and Trmíková as the actress, yet the critics were intrigued by Karel Dobrý’s role of Franz Kafka. Little Creator is a site-specific project inspired by Kafka’s life and work. JEDL staged it in non-traditional theatre space, the House at the Minute at the Old Town Square, where Kafka spent some time as a child.

The best theatre – Cirk La Putyka – is an established company on the Czech stage. Brothers Rosťa and Vítek Novák founded the company in 2008 and they have resided in Jatka78 in the Holešovice market since 2014. La Putyka is dedicated to contemporary circus and in their own words, the current topic is the most important for them. They also emphasize the variety of genres and multiculturalism, as well as innovative features in every new project.

Apart from other traditional awards for stage design, music, the Czech play staged for the first time, and talent of the year, the special award “Quarantine Theatre – special pandemic award)”. It went to six companies – from Continuo Theatre, Wariot Ideal to Cirk La Putyka. Cirk was acknowledged for their #kulturunezastavis initiative designed for “all artists and art productions: for everybody who want to do their job”. Regarding the flexibility of theatre, they appeal to presentations outside the venues and concepts. The initiative has hosted over 210 small cultural events.
