LearnFerdinand Vaněk’s Award for a play with a political topic went to the Czech author for the first time
hort plays about politics, written by European playwrights, are nominated for the Ferdinand Vaněk’s Award. This year’s winner is the double winner of the Alfréd Radok Award for the best play S. d. Ch., real name Miloslav Vojtíšek, who is also the first Czech winner in all four years. The award is inspired by Ferdinand Vaněk, the hero of Václav Havel’s short plays and his alter ego. The professional journal World and Theatre, which organizes the competition, respects Havel’s idea of “non-political politics,” thus, the competition is not actually a competition at all. Even though the winner is announced, prizes go to everybody – it is a cut pint. This year saw 13 authors from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Norway, Poland, Austria, Russia, Slovakia, and Great Britain. The author of the winning play The Monument Guar, or a Forgotten Unicorn, writes prose and plays, he does collages, composes, writes lyrics, and is the head of the band Ruce naší Dory.
He runs the dramatic seminar Varlén, where he stages his plays. He is the main author of the Divus publishing house, works with Rubato publishing house, Polí5 brand, and other magazines.
