“A comedy from the agricultural environment.”
(Johannes Kirsten, Maxim Gorki Theatre)
An audiovisual documentary performance, The Good Times Are Over explores the relationship between a grandson and his grandfather against the backdrop of parliamentary and presidential elections. An art student living in Prague and a retired agronomist meet on a couch in a three-generational household to discuss the world’s past, present, and future. A search for possibilities of society-wide dialogue during a visit to Grandpa.
The author spent seven months trying to understand his grandfather, spending time with him so that they could transform one another through dialogue. In his diary entries, he reveals what cannot be expressed aloud due to established conventions and the family’s views, offering viewers insight into his anger and frustration. There are no pleasant decisions in a relationship with an ideological enemy. What institution silences our voices more than the family?
