You never give me priority to the right here. I’ll step on the gas, catch up to you in a few seconds, and tap on your window. I’m gesturing furiously, but you’re not looking at me. Never. Even if I deliver food to your door. You’re looking at the portable payment terminal to see if the amount fits. Never at me. But soon, you’ll have to see me.
A ruthless battle rages in the city streets. Cyclists versus motorists. A world reduced to those with two wheels and those with four. No dialogue is possible through the car window. The only way to meet is to crash. The prose hit by Petr Šesták, nominated for the 2023 Magnesia Litera, caused quite a stir on the Czech literary scene – its surprisingly polished form and the urgency of its message drew attention to the topic of our contemporary culture wars. How far are we willing to go, convinced of the righteousness of our just cause? The budding director Martin Modrý challenges both the novel’s narrator and the audience to take stock of their own ideologies.
About the company
Husa na provázku Theatre represents a Czech art movement whose origins can be traced back to the late 1960s, to the period of the Prague Spring. Since 1967, the theatre has brought together theatre people, writers, musicians and artists, for whom art is a way of life and the creation of art is a privilege.
Its work is characterised by an emphasis on developing a unique heritage of ‘irregular dramaturgy,’ which consists in staging current, originally non-dramatic texts and non-textual concepts in non-theatrical spaces with the power of the imagination and shared physicality. In its work, the theatre builds on freedom of expression, openness to dialogue, and plurality of opinion, and, by way of its productions, it strives to overcome barriers and contradictions in society, to draw marginalised groups into the centre of public debate, and to strengthen social cohesion.
Today, Husa na provázku Theatre occupies a unique place on the map of European theatre and collaborates with both Czech and foreign leading contemporary directors. The theatre’s award-winning productions are regularly hosted at festivals around the world. Since June 2021, the artistic director of Husa na provázku Theatre has been the widely acclaimed young dramaturg Martin Sládeček.
