Inspired by the French film of the same name by Albert Lamorisse, The Red Balloon tells the story of a little boy and his balloon, which can not only fly wherever it wishes but, above all, return the boy’s friendship. Will the boy defend his inflatable friend from uncomprehending adults and a gang of street urchins? This poetic, almost wordless production for the youngest audiences is performed in a cosy studio space. Created in collaboration with designer Berta Doubková by a local creative team (director Michaela Homolová, dramaturg Vít Peřina and musician Filip Homola) with many award-winning titles for young audiences to their credit (About a Lamb that Fell from Heaven, Choo. Choo. Whistle. Woof!, etc).
About the company
The Naive Theatre Liberec was established in 1949 as one of the first professional puppet theatres in former Czechoslovakia. While the theatre’s work has naturally pursued different directions, it has maintained its position with audiences and professionals as a high-quality Czech puppet theatre for the past 70 years.
The Naive Theatre Liberec currently works with a wide range of authors and directors. The programme focuses on the production of puppet or art performances for children and youth and also emphasises original, authorial work.
Today, the Naive Theatre performs more than 300 performances annually for approximately 50, 000 spectators in the Czech Republic and abroad.
The Naive Theatre Liberec organises the Mateřinka International Festival, focusing on puppet performances for preschool-age children. The Mateřinka Festival has an almost 50-year tradition and is held biennially in the city of Liberec. It is well-known and appreciated for its quality throughout the puppetry world.
