CONFLUENCE frames the confluence area of the Berounka and Vltava rivers as a laboratory of transformation.

The Prague Institute of Planning and Development, the Academy of Performing Arts and the University of Economics in Prague are running a research project titled “The Interpretation of Landscape Aspects through the Humanities and Arts Sciences.” This project explores approaches to mediating a deeper experience of nature and shifting the mental picture of a peri-urban landscape – from a fragmented, neglected and underappreciated territory on the periphery of the city to an important area in need of care, protection and a vision for meaningful development. We examine the area (1,300 hectares, 6 administrative units, 350 landowners) through the lens of the collaborating natural sciences and humanities and follow the city’s needs regarding adaptation to climate change.

Five interpretation centres and educational programs have been created at five different locations. Using interactive exhibits, performances, site-specific theatre and other art forms, the centres provoke an intellectual and emotional connection to the landscape’s qualities in local communities and visitors. The transferable methodology offers ways to interpret the sociological, ecological, cultural, historical and economic aspects of the area‎, responding to the question: “How to use artistic methods within the territorial development agenda, at what stage, and alongside what other inputs?”
