The festival One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest 2021 has awarded the Erik prize

The 31st edition of the One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest festival, which took place on 4-7 November 2021 offered an overview of the contemporary Czech professional and amateur puppet theatre. The end of the festival saw the ceremony of the ERIK challenge award for the most inspiring puppet production staged in the past theatre season: The Journey of the Good Hans Böhm through Europe staged in the ALFA Theatre.

The production is about the “anti-hero” Hans Böhm from a little village in Western Bohemia (Holýšov), who makes his way through wartime Central Europe and his situation remains complicated even after the war. The project of the director and new artistic director of Alfa Tomsa Legierski focuses on questions like What forms us? What are we capable of if we are driven by self-preservation? How strong are our inner moral imperatives? The second place went to the production of Dinopera by KHWOSHCH company and the third place went to Hanka Voříšková and her Přesýpání.

The Empire of Puppets Theatre and Minor Theatre hosted the festival for four days and offered art presentations of students, amateurs, professionals, discussions, and artistic and puppet workshops for families with children. One of the goals of the Cuckoo’s Nest is to show that puppet theatre is not only preserved cultural heritage but also a developing artistic field.
