Two worlds on one planet

Prague in 1908, and the territory of the Chamacoco Indian tribe in the Paraguayan rainforest. Traveller and cactus hunter Frič, and the South American Indian Cherwuish. There are no worlds further apart. There’s only one freedom though. And the struggle for it can be just as highly charged whether the opponent is wild and often cruel nature, or a rigid and hypocritical society without any imagination.

The adventures of this picaresque duo as a source of Hašek’s playful humour, as well as a message about the need to recognise otherness. To get to know it, but without changing it irreversibly. Still, when travelling to another world, there’s always the risk that a completely different person will return home. And where, actually, do the boundaries of our ‘home’ lie?

An exploration of the roots of our ideas about our own level of development.

Audience: adult, children 12+

About the company:

A stage for contemporary themes and unexpected forms

This is a Czech art movement whose origins can be traced back to the late 1960s, to the period of the Prague Spring. Since 1967, the theatre has brought together theatre people, writers, musicians and artists, for whom art is a way of life and the creation of art is a privilege.

This theatre movement, based in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, is characterized by its emphasis on developing a unique heritage of ‘irregular dramaturgy’, which consists in staging current, originally non-dramatic texts and non-textual concepts in non-theatrical spaces with the power of the imagination and shared physicality.

In its work, the theatre builds on freedom of expression, openness to dialogue and plurality of opinion, and, by way of its productions, it strives to overcome barriers and contradictions in society, to draw marginalized groups into the centre of public debate, and to strengthen social cohesion.

Today, Goose on a String Theatre occupies a unique place on the map of European theatre and collaborates with leading contemporary Czech and foreign directors. The theatre’s award-winning productions are regularly hosted at festivals around the world.  Since June 2021, the artistic director of Goose on a String Theatre has been the widely acclaimed young dramaturge Martin Sládeček.
