The Elegance of the Molecule
A theatre play by one of the Czech Republic’s most accomplished contemporary playwrights Petr Zelenka, deals with genesis and the dramatic development of molecules into anti-AIDS substances produced by Czech chemical laboratories. A discovery of a Czech chemist Antonín Holý can nowadays save millions of lives thanks to the mutual effort of three scientists, of whom one is a Belgian virologist Erik De Clercq. Since the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU is an opportunity to celebrate the Czech scientific achievements, the renowned Prague theatre company Dejvické theatre came to Belgium to perform the fascinating story, this time in De Clercq’s country. The performance was accompanied by a two-day scientific symposium organized by the Rega Institute for Medical Research and the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.
