30th edition of the One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest festival: We have not given up!

Despite the complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s anniversary edition will take place online on 11-13 December 2020. Although this was a last-minute decision, the festival managers gathered they would use technologies and would head to its viewers’ homes. The productions will be broadcast as recordings made for this festival, as well as live streams. The viewers will not miss traditional workshops and the programme will also feature evening online discussions with hosts.

One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest has always presented performances by statutory puppet theatres we have managed to cooperate with in these specific times. The recordings will be provided by the DRAK Theatre, Alfa Theatre, Lampion Theatre, and Naïve Theatre in Liberec. The theatres have necessary technical equipment, thus it was possible to obtain high-quality video recordings that will be available to the viewers in a limited time. The following independent companies will participate as well: Vi. Tvor, Divadlo LokVar, Waxwing theatre, and popular company Cakes and Puppets.

The festival also supports amateur and emerging/student puppet theatres. The long-term cooperation with KALD DAMU and the international project Drama Label will be represented by the Entomologious production. The amateur theatres will offer live streams of the Convivium company from the F. A. Šporek art school in Jaroměř (Erben 1862), Reservé company from F. L. Gassmann art school in most Most (Malala) or the recording of the production Of Animals by Vozichet in Jablonec.

This year’s new feature is a new association with DidaDiv project that employs the phenomenon of Czech puppetry and home theatres and brings it to the online space. Viewers can also watch the traditional workshop by Dora Bouzková (who was nominated for the Thalia Award 2020) that focuses on production and animation this time. Every festival day will host an on-line discussion with speakers ranging from theatremakers, theoreticians, critics to art school students. Apart from the analysis of the performances, the discussion will try to open the topic of puppets in online space.
